School unites for relay

For a good cause: Bonnyrigg High School students and teacher Bianca Bilbija are looking forward to this year’s Liverpool Relay for Life. A team of 24Bonnyrigg High School staff and students will be participating in the Liverpool Relay for Life event this weekend.

PDHPE teacher Bianca Bilbija said this is the first time the school has entered a team into the relay.

“When I was a student at high school, my school entered aRelayForLifeteam and I was involved,” she said.

“This is how I knew aboutRelayForLifeand when I decided I wanted to get our school, Bonnyrigg High School, involved in this terrific fundraiser I applied and registered online.

“All the students have volunteered to be involved.A number of them have mentioned how they are excited to be fundraising to raise moneyforcancer research, sufferers and carers.”

The relay is an overnight cancer fund raising eventhappening on from 9.30am on SaturdayApril 30,to 10am the following morning,at Hillier Oval.

“Earlier this yearI lost a family member to cancer and my grandmother has recently had skin cancer removed from her face,”Ms Bilbijasaid.

“I have also heard a number of stories where people I know are sufferingor have beat cancer and I really wanted tohelp make a difference, whether that difference be big or small.

“I wanted our students of Bonnyrigg High School to have the opportunity to give back to the community and to allow them to develop a sense of achievementandaccomplishmentforbeing involved with something that will help others.”

She said the students had beenactively involved in the decision to run afundraiserat theschool.

“Our school is fundraising by having a colours day where the students will donate a gold coin donation and wear yellow and purple accessories,” Ms Bilbijasaid.

“We are also holding a fun run obstacle course at school, where the students will be in teams of fourand donate a gold coin to participate.”
